Lo que definió esta década fue la aparición de cineastas como Abbas Kiarostami, Wong Kar-Wai, David Lynch y Quentin Tarantino, quienes reinventaron el cine y crearon una nueva generación en Cannes; con películas como Hoop Dreams, The Celebration, Toy Story y The Matrix, en donde el uso de la tecnología creaba una posibilidad infinita.
